WIND TURBINE VENTILATION

How effective are wind turbine ventilators? Not very effective at all, testing done by Deakin University Architecture and Built Environment Laboratory on wind turbine ventilators using state of the art infrared technology and the most versatile and comprehensive diagnostic multidimensional toolkit for key performance of energy, light, sound and comfort. Demonstrated that the turbine ventilators as tested achieved no flow velocity from the roofspace or walls at all and is totally inadequate to remove any heat load from the roofspace and walls see test on this site under Case Studies & Reports – “Whirlybirds Don’t Work”. The ventilators as tested were very expensive supposedly state of the art ventilators. The eco homes the tests were carried out on had open eaves so plenty of inlet air with nowhere to go.

WIND TURBINE VENTILATORS JUST BEFORE THEY DIE THEY SQUEAK AND SQUAWK TILL THEY FLOP

The noise from a cheap wind turbine ventilator on its death knoll can cause many sleepless nights before it comes to rest, for the inhabitants and their neighbours. When wind turbine vents do finally stop due to bearing failure they may finally allow some stale air from the roofspace to escape however this would be minimal, as most wind turbines don’t have anywhere to access ambient air flow. It is supposed that each wind turbine would have four eaves vents to induce ambient airflow into the roofspace, however it is my experience as a roofer for 50 years that most wind turbines do not have any eaves vents installed at all. Wind turbines allow dusts and rain to enter and have shown to be blown out easily in very high wind conditions.

You really need the ambient temperature to flow throughout the roof cavity, using inlets and outlets for each zone of your roofspace. Having no moving parts that will never need replacement that will keep your roof cavity dry from condensation all year round and your home cool in summer. Products that easily achieve excellent results for very effective roofspace ventilation, that have no moving parts to wear out and never need replacement can be found on this site – The Universal Tile Ventilator for tiled roofs and The Smoothline Ventilator for corrugated colorbond roofs.
