How far do we go in securing our property from thieves? What precautions do we take? We need to take precautionary steps against theft, as in this day and age we cannot escape the fact that low life trash are breaking and entering our properties, rummaging through our personal items and taking whatever they like to fuel their drug raged habits. There is no getting away from it everyone knows someone and/or has been robbed, so what are we to do, how far do we go?
WINDOW LOCKS, DOUBLE DOOR BOLTS, DEAD LOCKS FOR A START WILL GO A LONG WAY
Window Locks – Keyed window locks are the best way to secure window sashes. Dead locks on the front and back door, both front and back doors should be solid timber doors, do not use hollow core doors. On sliding doors, French doors and bi-fold doors – double bolt locks especially on sliding doors one lockable bolt to the top and one lockable bolt to the bottom, on all leafs of sliding doors, this stops the door from being lifted and removed and also makes it pretty pinch bar proof as the glass in most sliding, bi-fold and French doors is generally laminated glass and very hard to break sometimes almost impossible. However, some window and door companies still use toughened glass. Whilst this is 4-5 times stronger than normal glass usually 4-5mil thick it can be easily broken with just one tap of a hammer.
So make sure that all external glass doors are constructed including laminated glass at least 6mil thick, the noise they make trying to get through that with top and bottom lockable door bolts will surely bring the cavalry.
I knew of one chap who was living in a precarious area of Canberra and was sick of being broken into, brought a sliding door that was 13mil thick laminated glass that was the end of his problem. However that was going overboard in general with 13mil being almost bullet proof it is extremely heavy to slide, but it did solve his problem.
WINDOWS AND DOORS ARE USUALLY THE MOST COMMON AREA OF ENTRY BUT WHAT ABOUT THE ROOF
In general the most common types of roof covering for a home are roof tiles or corrugated colorbond roofing. So what is the safest roof covering for your roof, let’s look at roof tiles – as roof tiles number about 2,000 to 2,500 tiles for the average home of today it can be quite easy to remove half a dozen tiles anywhere around the roof and gain entry to your home. You could make it a bit harder for thieves by having the roof sarked however all they need to do is cut the sarking out or kick through it. Thieves need to be able to gain entry quickly and quietly, so the harder you make it for them the less chance you have to be robbed.
Looking at corrugated metal roofing – as these roofs usually use full length sheets average 5 metres long then the whole roof is screw fixed makes corrugated metal roofing the best option to foil thieves – unless of course they can rip out a large protusion such as a skylight and make access this would usually be an extreme measure and most likely would not happen. However thieves do not care how much damage they do to your home they just look for the quickest, easiest access.
WHAT IS THE BEST SCENARIO FOR THE SECURITY OF YOUR HOME – SECURITY MEASURES
Dead bolts on solid timber doors front and back doors also on internal garage doors you should make sure internal garage doors are also solid timber.
French doors, bi-folds and sliding perimeter doors should be constructed with at least 6mil laminated glass with lockable bolts, both top and bottom.
A corrugated colorbond roof is the most secure roofing system.
Motion sensor lights will turn on when someone enters – under cover of darkness – so you have the scenario to safety thief proof the perimeter access to your home as best you can, then you should look at installing an alarm system and if you want to get extremely protected a surveillance camera system.
Drawing from experience when a thief sees that a home has a security system installed he will leave your home intact and go next door.
Believe me, no-one wants to go through the most invasive attack to your privacy and confidence as being robbed, so take at least the most basic steps to protecting your property and the privacy of your own home – your castle.
