HOW TO STOP CONDENSATION ON METAL ROOFS

How do you stop condensation on a metal roof? Firstly, I will give you the ingredients to stopping condensation before it starts, that is if you are building a new home and you have not installed the roof as yet.

So you are about to install your new roof – to give you an example the best way is to start out by using timber battens, steel battens are notorious for attracting condensation. Then I would use a blanket foil combination with the blanket exposed to the roof sheets, this will take care of the freeze thaw or more to the point the dew point this is where the heat from a home escapes to the roofspace and rises to come in contact with the roof covering and the way to control this phenomenon best is to use timber battens and blanket foil insulation under the roofsheet.

However in saying that, with the ceiling insulation and the blanket foil holding all that heat within the roofspace, if you don’t add an effective roof ventilation system you will over exacerbate the problems for condensation.

So the hat trick for a condensation free metal roof – is timber battens, blanket foil insulation and an effective roof ventilation system.

OH NO – YOU HAVE AN EXISTING ROOF THAT IS HAEMORAGING CONDENSATION – IS IT RAINING IN YOUR ROOF

You may have blanket foil with metal battens – you may have sarking that has been laid too tight and brought the sarking into contact with the roof sheet rendering the sarking useless.

You may have no vapour barrier at all, just the roof sheet on its own.

There are many reasons you can have a condensation problem with a metal roof these are just a few. But if you even contemplate a metal roof without an effective roof ventilation system you are looking for big trouble with condensation, even if you do everything right.

With a metal roof it is a priority to have an effective roofspace ventilation system. See BLOG on this site “Warning! Read Before you Design your Next Housing Project” there are many other blogs regarding condensation on this site.
